ISDN Connection

What is ISDN?

By simply dialling a telephone, you can have fast, flexible, highly reliable and digitally clear connections. New communications services based on Integrated Services Digital Network technology make this possible. With ISDN, you can send any combination of voice, image, video or data across town or around the world. Based upon international communications standards, ISDN provides you with access to the powerful capabilities of today's public telephone network.

How fast is an ISDN line?

ISDN Single Line Service can provide you with high speed Internet access at 128 KBPS or 230 KBPS (with compression). Single Line Service also makes it possible to send and receive voice and data all on the same telephone line. You can send a fax and be surfing the net or be on a voice call simultaneously.

What do I need to connect to the Internet using ISDN?

There are three basic components required:

  • An ISDN phone line from the telephone company (Fortunately, ISDN is available to 96% of the Australian population)

  • ISDN Internet access and Internet software

  • ISDN hardware

An ISDN line is physically exactly the same as a normal phone line -- a twisted-pair copper wire. In many cases, a phone line that has been used as a normal telephone line can be used as an ISDN phone line as well. While the physical wire itself is the same as a normal phone line, the hardware that it connects through at the phone company is quite different.

Do I need a special modem to call West Australian Networks through an ISDN line?

ISDN modems (typically called terminal adapters or TA's, NT1. NT1 Plus 2) use to be a pricey computer item: however, these days, companies such as 3Com, Hayes and US Robotics offer ISDN modems that don't cost a lot more than 56kbps modems. More expensive TA's by companies such as Ascend are available, but the features offered by these modems are often not needed by the average customer. Telstra now provide everything you need (included in the price).

How do I order ISDN service?

Call the John, West Australian Networks approved ISDN provider at Albany Business Telephones on 08 98423500 or fax him on 08 98421164.

Some phone companies will offer deals where they will include an ISDN terminal adapter with the purchase of an ISDN line (as Telstra do). While this sounds like a great deal, be careful of the kind of ISDN adapter they are offering. Occasionally, they will offer an inexpensive ISDN modem that may be prone to problems, or not have all the features you need.

More detailed information on how to order your ISDN service can be located at the bottom of this page.

More Detailed instructions on ordering your ISDN service

Telstra's new ISDN Internet Plan will be launched on 28 July 2003

Telstra has made some changes to the terms and conditions of the supply of the ISDN Internet Plan.

What are the changes?

Where previously calls to Telstra 019830 numbers were excluded from the zero rating, they are now included, therefore any calls an ISDN Home customer makes to West Australian Networks 01983 number will be uncharged.

Telstra's ISDN Internet Plan is a calling plan that applies to Telstra's ISDN Home access services. For a monthly rental fee of $16.50 (GST inclusive) the ISDN Internet Plan provides ISDN Home access customers with the opportunity to make uncharged direct dial data calls to West Australian Networks 01983xxx number.

Benefits

* With the ISDN Internet Plan, ISDN customers will receive superior internet speeds (than dialup) at an affordable price. The ISDN Internet Plan will enable customers to connect to the Internet at speeds of up to 128kbps.
* For only an additional fee of $16.50 per month on top of the usual ISDN Home monthly rental charges ($45.50), residential customers will receive no charges for data calls to West Australian Networks 0198 national number.
* ISDN customers will have a known and fixed fee per month for Internet calls regardless of the number and duration of calls.
* The ISDN Internet Plan is particularly relevant for customers in regional areas where DSL or cable Internet access services are unavailable.

Billing and Ordering

You will be able to order the ISDN Internet Plan for any ISDN Home service or when ordering a new ISDN Home service,.
For customers not on ebill, the ISDN Internet Plan rental charge will appear on bills as "ISDN Internet Plan" in the Service Summary section. Calls made to 01983 numbers will be included in the ISDN (OnRamp) Local Data Call Summary by Service section under Data Calls. The discounted calls will be listed in the Discount Summary section of the bill
For customers on ebill, calls will be rated at zero (in the daily event file) rather than charged and then discounted.
