VPN Solutions
VPN's or (Virtual Private Networks) provide clients with a very secure, reliable, high performance communications (data and or voice) connection between remote office locations.
West Australian Networks provides a secure, business-grade broadband DSL access network across Australia. This network enables the overlay of Private IP VPNs that optimise all current developments for interoffice connectivity. Because transmitted data stays within the West Australian Networks / Requests network it is called a Private IP VPN. Quality, security and performance are key differentiators.
Initially IP VPNs took the form of CPE-based (Customer Premises Equipment) IP VPNs, where the intelligence of the network (wide area network or WAN) resides in the hardware and software of the enterprise. Encryption of data must be applied as it passes over the public Internet. This type of IP VPN faces many challenges to the user organisation and these challenges have impeded or prevented widespread implementation.
Network-based IP VPNs, on the other hand, are a relatively new global innovation where the intelligence of the WAN resides in a carrier network and is passed through to the enterprise as appropriate. This approach, used by West Australian Networks & Request, substantially reduces capital and operating costs and expedites service delivery.

Basics
Common Scenarios
Generally there are two common scenarios in which you will want to set up VPN's, the first is
LAN - to-LAN:
Linking two branch offices together across the Internet, for this we recommend using IPSec.
Roaming:
Connecting to your office or home from a single PC at a remote location. For this we recommend using PPTP because the client is standard in Windows and most other operating systems, it is quite easy to setup.
Authentication Scheme :
MSCHAP V2 is the most secure and recommended. It uses encrypted passwords.
CHAP is less secure
PAP is even less secure, but more common. In some cases you may have to choose your scheme, if the default does not work.
