E-mail List Server Types
Announcement Lists
Announcements lists are the perfect way to handle one-way communication such
as email newsletters or email marketing campaigns.
With an announcement list, only list administrators are allowed to post messages
to the list, these messages are then distributed to all list members. Messages
that are not sent by a list administrator are not distributed.
Discussion Lists and Moderated Lists
Discussion lists are best suited to handle topical forums.
With discussion lists, any member of the list may post messages to the list,
there messages are then distributed to all list members. With a moderated
list, messages must be approved by the moderator before they are distributed
to other list members. Moderated lists are used predominantly to control or
avoid bad language, spam / advertising posts etc etc.
List members may choose whether to receive messages as they are posted (real
time) or to receive a daily "digest" which compiles all messages
posted the previous day into one message.
Features
West Australian Networks list service offers all of the basic functionality
that you need to set up and manage your own list/s.
Private Lists
Private lists require administrator approval for new members to join / subscribe.
Email Management
Using password-protected email, list administrators may send commands to
subscribe, unsubscribe, change member options, etc.
Web Management
A web interface is provided to manage all aspects of your list including
posts to list members, list options, member options, incoming and outgoing
mail.
Bounce and Purge Handling
If mail is returned to the list server from a bad or discontinued email addresses
more than a specified number of times (set by the list administrator), the
offending address is automatically marked as inactive and is not sent any
further mail. The administrator is then sent an e-mail detailing the address/es
that have been marked inactive, this allows the administrator to view transaction
details for each failed email delivery and decide whether to manually remove
the address from the list.
Archives
List messages are archived for browsing by visitors or list members when
ever desired.
Custom Domain
The list service allow you to use a custom domain (e.g., list.mydomain.com.au).
Digests
The list service allows members to receive a compiled digest of all email
messages posted for the previous day rather than each email message as it
is posted to the list.
Subscribe Confirmation
Subscribe confirmations require a new member to reply to an email request
for list membership. Required subscribe confirmations reduce the number of
fake and non requested email addresses in your list which will reduce spam
complaints.
Subscribe / Unsubscribe Using A Form/Script
Using a standard HTML form and some type of send mail script, you may offer
list sign-up from your web site. The script will translate form information
into an email command to your lists server thus automating the entire process
for you.
Custom Email Header and Footer
The header and footer of posts may be customised to suit your requirements
Custom Email Headers
Email headers may be customized or added to each post for information such
as list information links, unsubscribe forms, etc.
Custom Responses
All responses including welcome and goodbye messages may be customized.
Document Bots and Auto responders
The list service provides Document Bots or simple Auto responders. Document
Bot is an email address which parses any email sent to it and responds with
emails or documents for matching keywords.
For example, you could create an entire sales catalogue system where customers
receive help specific to the keywords in their help request. If a customer
sends an email containing "product", the service could automatically
respond with your "product" guide.
Content filtering
When a message is received by the list and you have enabled content filtering,
the individual attachments are first compared to the filter types. If the
attachment type matches an entry in the filter types, it is discarded.
Then, if there are pass types defined, any attachment type that does not
match a pass type is also discarded. If there are no pass types defined, this
check is skipped.
After this initial filtering, any multipart attachments that are empty are
removed. If the outer message is left empty after this filtering, then the
whole message is discarded. Then, each multipart/alternative section will
be replaced by just the first alternative that is non-empty after filtering.
Finally, any text/html parts that are left in the message may be converted
to text/plain if convert_html_to_plaintext is enabled and the site is configured
to allow these conversions.
MultiLingual Support
The list service includes the ability to view any interface in your choice
of either Czech, Danish, German, English (USA), Spanish (Spain), Estonian,
Euskara, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Dutch, Norwegian,
Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Serbian, Swedish or Ukrainian.

List server FAQ's
(Q) Why do I need a list server when I can send the emails from my
own computer?
A list server specialises in the delivery of large quantities of emails.
To send a large amount of e-mails from your desktop, you would either have
to send one email to every recipient or carbon-copy all recipients (thereby
showing the addresses to everyone). With a list server, you send one email
and the list server software distributes that email to everyone on your list.
A list server also deals with bounced email messages more efficiently than
a regular email server. Your email host will not appreciate a ton of bounced
emails clogging their (POP3) incoming mail server.
(Q) Why should I pay for email list hosting when I can get it for
free from other sites?
Many sites offer free email list hosting, but you will also find that they
post banner ads on your list site and do not offer the features of a professional
ISP or email list hosting company. As always the phrase "You get what
you pay for" is very true.
(Q) Do I need a web site in order to use email list hosting services?
No, you only need an email account.
(Q) Will I be charged for using services beyond my contract?
We sell all services with specific maximums. All list services are monitored
and should you exceed your contracted limits on a consistent basis, you will
need to upgrade your service.
(Q) Will my list show banner ads?
No, we will never display text or graphic banner ads on your list.
(Q) Will I need to buy any software?
No, all list server software resides on our network. You can manage your
list with either email commands or via the web interface we provide.
(Q) Does it matter what operating system or browser I use?
No. Since you will be managing your lists via email or the web, any operating
system, browser or email application should be compatible.
(Q) Do I need much experience with lists to administer them?
No, the web interface system is very easy to use. Online help is provided.
Generally once we have set up your list, you only need to post messages.
(Q) What version of Mailman does West Australian Networks use?
We currently use version 2.0.11 We upgrade to newer versions when they are
proven to be completely stable. We prefer reliability over new features.
(Q) What public lists are available through West Australian Networks?
All the publicly available lists are documents at http://mail.westnet.net.au/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/
(Q) Are the lists covered by any terms or conditions?
Yes they certainly are, operation and use of the lists are covered by the
West Australian Networks Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) which can be found at:
ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
